In the film adaptation of Tom Clancy's The Hunt For Red October, Jack Ryan has to convince the captain of a U.S. submarine not to fire on the eponymous Red October based on Ryan's knowledge of the Red October's skipper. He does this by guessing, correctly, the Red October would "crazy Ivan" to starboard at the bottom of the hour. This established, the captain agrees to try and make contact with the Red October with the hopes the ship's crew is attempting to defect from the Soviet Union and not, as assumed, trying to blow up the U.S. and start a war. Today we posted a story about foreign cars being vandalized in Michigan with the assumption it was a pro-UAW/anti-foreign sentiment. Tekamul, in the role of Jack Ryan, offered an alternative explanation as to what actually happened.
It may just be a hunch, but I think this story has it all wrong. The two events (slogan scrawled on the windshield, and slashing the tires) are a complete coincidence.
The tire slashing can be chalked up to Detroit's embrace of the Holiday Spirit.Peace on earth
Good will towards men, and
Concern for general safety.I'm sure the vehicles' tires were under inflated, and rather than allow the driver to risk his own life, and the lives of others, this concerned gentleman made the under inflation more apparent by letting all the air out. Safety first!!
The blunt slogan on the windshield is in no doubt a personal commentary on the slumping economy, and a suggestion for future investment. Buy U.S. T-Bills!! just isn't as catchy.
The fact that four of these incidents overlapped is purely coincidence. Because nobody would be foolish enough to think this would be effective in stemming the tide of the Big-3 collapse, or that nobody would see them in the middle of the day, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, in a shopping center parking lot.
Hopefully, they all went fishing afterwards.
