10 Favorite Cars For Men

| воскресенье, 30 августа 2009 г.

MSNBC has a cool profile of cars that men like. They make some general assumptions that most men like big and powerful cars. Personally I’d rather go with fast, small, and economical but hey a lot of men do like the big and powerful.

Imposing SUVs with boxy styling and large grilles have a “big and powerful” look that experts say resonates with men.

I know quite a few guys who have to have a big truck in the city even though they will never use it.

BYD F0 Sport Unveiled At Guangzhou Auto Show [Guangzhou International Auto Show]

|

Leave it to Chinese automaker BYD to build a Toyota Aygo cheaper and cooler, as they've done with the release of the BYD F0 Sport. The F0 Sport comes equipped with such innovative additions of performance as red seat covers with pillows on them, a red shifter knob, and a sporty paint job over a mild body kit. The whole deal goes for $5,000 US, which, is a fair bit more than the Guangzhou International Auto Show committee spent on press room food. We don't mean to complain or anything, but were the fried grasshoppers really necessary? Sure they're good, but can't a Jalop get a hamburger around here?

1963 Chevrolet Chevy II Station Wagon [Down On The Street]

|

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Hooray for old Detroit station wagons! You don't see many small Detroit wagons these days, since the Vista Cruisers and Country Squires sold in such greater numbers back in the pre-SUV era, so I was very happy to spot this bright yellow, Moon disc-equipped Chevy II (or maybe it's a Nova- hard to say with the emblems removed) parked downtown.

You could get your little Chevy wagon with a 153-cubic-inch four-cylinder- whoa, a four-cylinder in a 60s Detroit wagon? Call the HUAC! You could also get a 194-cube six-cylinder; sorry, V8 fans, you had to wait until '64 for an optional 283 in your Chevy II.

Even though this wagon's owner is clearly a salt-flat-crazed hot rod hoodlum, the single exhaust suggests that he or she has kept the four or six under the hood. Parts runnner? Daily driver?

The Mercedes-Benz GLK Gets a Sneak Peak Ahead of Bejing Unveiling

| пятница, 28 августа 2009 г.

MercedesGLK-16.jpg picture by willfusion

The Mercedes-Benz GLK has received its fair share of press and promise of the many months. First it was spied at the Sex and the City Movie set and then it received its introduction in concept dressing at this years Detroit Auto Show in January. Now the official unveiling in Bejing is at our doorstep and Mercedes-Benz is preparing the viewing public with photos and information on how they see their GLK model fitting into the Mercedes-Benz brand, into their SUV line-up and a bit of how it will appeal to buyers. That last part, appealing to buyers, is the most important part.

The GLK entry-level sport utility is aimed at competing against the BMW X3 and the up-coming Audi Q5. Taking its styling cue from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class the GLK takes on the open grilled hungry appearance that makes the new C-Class stand out on the streets. The all new design will surely gain favor with the Mercedes-Benz dedicated shopper, but in some regards the new design taps into an SUV past in shape. There is something of a touch of a shrunken down Land Cruiser to the general mold of the GLK.

Here is how Mercedes-Benz Design Chief Prof. Peter Pfeiffer described the GLK’s design influence:  “With the G-Class we created a style icon that has been a benchmark in SUV design for the past 30 years. Combining this bold concept with the latest Mercedes-Benz design idiom makes the GLK a vehicle of genuine character.”

Group Wants Pontiac GTO Investigated

|

Pontiacgto270

The Center for Auto Safety is calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open an investigation into the 2004 - 06 Pontiac GTO. The slow-selling muscle car was built in Australia and imported into the U.S., where it was given larger tires that the group is claiming rubbed against the front struts of the car, causing excessive wear leading to 65 complaints. Pontiac replaced the front struts in 2006, but NHTSA has received more than 100 complaints about faulty struts, not tires, in 2006 models. We’ll keep an eye on the situation to see if NHTSA does indeed begin an investigation or if GM issues a recall.

Olympic Air Quality Concerns Leads Bejing to Ban Auto Repairs and Painting

| четверг, 27 августа 2009 г.

It has been some time since China had any good press, and recent protests over air quality by Olympic athlete’s and international protests for a free Tibet have done little to lighten the mood. Things for China did not improve in the slightest when a University of California study released their findings and named China the #1 polluter on the planet (…YES! High Five!).

Finding it easier to squash and ignore the Tibet issue Chinese authorities are focused on showcasing their Olympic host city. As a means of addressing air quality issues Bejing has issued a few directives that are aimed at resulting in more sunny days in the Capital city.

In an effort to curb carbon emissions from automobile traffic Bejing has issued the equivalent of Drive-Day rationing. Based on the last letter of your license plate cars are ordered to only drive every-other day. And in a well-mannered society such as China we are certain there will not form a Black Market for extra license plates. (more…)

Ford Declares There Will Be One Global Focus in 2010! …or 2011!

|

eurofordfocus.jpg picture by willfusion

At the SAE World Congress in Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak made clear that the next generation Ford Focus in either 2010 or 2011 would receive one world design. Then he spoiled it by saying that it would be a joint effort between their North American and European design and engineering teams.

Part of Fords reorganization under President and CEO Allan Mulally has been to move toward this Global Platform procedure to cut down costs and duplication in worldwide designs. As with most things in the automotive industry (except for layoff’s) these types of changes take time and calculated planning.

The next generation Focus will be built upon Ford’s C1 platform and will hopefully provide North America a design that is on par with the Euro-spec Focus. How the North American designed current model Focus made it passed the drawing board is unfathomable and inexcusable.

As Kuzak stated, “Our business starts and stops with product.” If this globalization of design brings an RS and ST packaged Focus to the US then it might be a product worth starting with.

Thoughts on Porsche’s Troubles

2010 Porsche Boxster S1

2010 Porsche Boxster S1

We’re going to do a little speculating here. But these thoughts are not blue-sky blah-blah; they are based on what has been reported in the last few days about Porsche. It seems to me that the company may be in big trouble, and here are the reasons.

With Volkswagen planning a full merger with Porsche by 2011, CEO Martin Winterkorn is putting the heat on to get the volume up—big-time. We recently reported that Porsche has been given a well-nigh impossible sales goal of 150,000 cars per year by 2012. With the company presently selling 75,000 cars a year, such a requirement means: a) lowering prices, adding incentives, etc., or b) making some newer, cheaper models for a wider market.

With its debt load reaching close to $9 billion, Porsche will find these alternatives hard to execute. Winterkorn says he wants a new car smaller than the Boxster, a junior Cayenne, and some kind of new Panamera. Maybe he’s talking about the BlueSport roadster (below) for the former, which would be nice.

VW BlueSport RoadsterSo our brother/sister bloggers are speculating about zingy new cars, which of course is what Marty wants them to do. But the reality is that Porsche’s (and VW’s) stock is doing badly; there is actually a glut of inventory, with dealers holding more than 100 days’ supply of 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters; and production has been cut back.

The Truth About Cars reported these problems, and its commenters were quick to add their two cents:

As I recall, Porsche almost bought the farm the last time we had a recession of this magnitude (late ’80s, early ’90s). The mortgage brokers, stockbrokers, realtors and other assorted financial hucksters that bought these [cars] are now waiting tables at TGI Fridays.

Others pointed out that Porsche’s cars have been overpriced for years. Another, looking at figures on AutoTrader, found that “Porsche sold just 651 new 911s last month if you total up all the various configurations.” From this to 150,000 units a year??

My son, who is not a financial huckster, owns a 2004 911-C2 and told me he needed two new rear tires, again, at about $300 per. They last only 10-15,000 miles. Then there’s the regular Mobil-1 12-quart oil change that will run you around $200, including filter and labor.

You know the old saw attributed to J.P. Morgan: When asked about the cost of buying a yacht, the financier replied, “If you have to ask, then you probably can’t afford it.” It would be a shame to see Porsche go the way of Morgan’s yacht.

Do you think we’ll see newer, cheaper Porsches? Or devalued, less-expensive Boxsters and Cayennes?

First Drive: International MXT

|

Mxtsoldierfield

During the Chicago Auto Show last week, Mike Hanley and I were lucky enough to get to test-drive the new International MXT. This uber-truck is going into production as we blog this post today, and will start at $89,500 for the basic 4x4 pickup and upward of $130,000 for the luxury-appointed Limited model out later this year.

We drove the truck around the back of McCormick Place and up through the back streets that connect Soldier Field, the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium. These are pretty small streets, and I thought the MXT would hog both lanes, preventing anyone from passing us. To my surprise, though, the large truck hugged the yellow lines well, and it was easy for me to see the corners, at least up front. For someone who hasn’t driven anything larger than the average Silverado or Suburban, this was a new experience. I kept looking for a handle to blow an air horn.

Mxt_home

The side mirrors were huge and gave good rearward views, but blocked the view directly to the sides. A rear-mounted camera also aided in backing up.

The hardest thing about driving the MXT was the hydraulic brake setup. Saying the brakes were a bit grabby is an understatement, but after a few stops I had figured out the gentle coaxing needed to bring the sucker to a halt. Mike didn’t have as easy a time with the brakes, extracting a few more lurching stops out of the ride than I did. Neither one of us had a hard time accelerating, though. The right pedal’s feel was much more carlike and easy to adjust to.

Engine noise was extreme up front, so much so that I couldn’t hear much of anything from the backseat. We were told there was an entire section of baffling not in this early test model. Yep, that would do it. Besides being a bit more nimble and easier to navigate than I first thought, the MXT drove exactly how I thought it would -- like a really big truck.

Now, don’t think the MXT is for the everyday truck or SUV buyer; you better have a commercial purpose for this thing. It shares the same International V-8 diesel that Ford uses in its heavy-duty F-Series trucks. Maximum towing is rated at roughly 17,000 pounds, with a payload capacity of 4,400 pounds.

Mxtinterior1

The interior was comfortable everywhere but the driver’s seat, which seemed too high and close to the steering wheel for my thighs. In back, the bench fit three grown men without a leg touching. Now that’s manly.

Mxtbears

At the International booth inside McCormick Place, an MXT painted in a Chicago Bears scheme was a huge draw, despite the team’s Super Bowl loss. I think you better have a business that will paint its logo on the side of this thing to make it a viable purchase, because finding a parking space for this bad boy at the grocery store might not be so easy. Still, it could be the ultimate vehicle for a Costco or Home Depot run. No matter where you park it or drive it, you’ll turn heads. Everyone we passed turned their head to look, even if it was only because the MXT blocked all else from their line of sight.
