Nissan Helps Develop A Smart-Key Phone: Unlock and Start Your Car With A Call

| четверг, 1 октября 2009 г.

I’m a bit of a futurist; I like to speculate about new technologies. And I’ve always though that eventually, all of your tech needs will be filled by one device, probably all merged into a phone. Already this has happened to the majority of eletro-fobs: your phone can also be your music player and your camera and your internet access. Eventually you’ll be able print full sized A4 paper from your phone via an extendable arm and you’ll be able to project high quality video onto a wall via a mini projector. Maybe eventually we’ll have credit card swipes or RFID readers in our phones that would help speed along business transactions.

Nissan’s developed a technology along those lines with Sharp and NTT DOCOMO that will allow you to lock and unlock your car via your phone. It seems pretty simple, just squeeze your key-fob into a phone. The phone apparently works on Nissan’s two-way communication Intelligent Key system and would allow you to not only lock and unlock the car door, but also start and stop the engine. Pretty cool. It should be available starting in 2009.

The Magnificent Seven: 2009 BMW 7 Series

| четверг, 10 сентября 2009 г.

Details about the new 2009 BMW 7 series recently hit the internet along with a whole slew of pictures and video. The new fifth generation 7 series looks like it’s trying extra hard to make up for some of the design shortcomings of the current model.

The 2009 definitely has a sleeker look than the current, fourth generation BMW 7 series, with more elegant, flatter lines. The front end is more robust as well, with larger “nostrils”, aka the two distinctive kidney grilles. Those changes add up to a sports car look that seems to sit lower and look meaner than the current series. It may seem to sit lower, but the overall dimensions are almost exactly the same, except for the wheelbase, which has been bumped up by 3.3 inches.

The 2009 7 series has more power too. The 750i and the extended wheelbase 750Li that the US will be getting both have BMW’s new twin-turbo, direct-injection 4.4L V-8. They’ll put out 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque (between 1750 and 4500 rpm); which is an improvement of about 40 hp and 90 lb-ft over its predecessor.
According to BMW, the fifth generation 7 series will also have class-leading fuel economy.

Add the power increase with the increased wheelbase, the improved suspension, and the fact that BMW shaved 121 lbs off the fifth generation 7 series by using aluminum for the hood, fenders and suspension, and you’ve got a real driver’s car.

Being the high end flagship that it is, the 2009 BMW 7 Series has a laundry list of extras too, such as active, radar-guided cruise control with the ability to come to a complete stop, lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection, night vision with pedestrian detection, sideview and backup cameras all over the place, and the famous BMW heads-up display.

The most important option though, is the internet. The fifth generation 7 Series is the first production car in the world with internet access on board via ConnectDrive. Thank you BMW.

All that starting at $76,800, which is not really that bad. Once I make it big and get my book of science fiction haiku published, I might get one.

National Speed Limit Part II: Return of the Ridiculous Law

| понедельник, 7 сентября 2009 г.

In 1995, Ralph Nader said “history will never forgive Congress for this assault on the sanctity of human life.” Why? Because Congress had just repealed the 55 mile per hour speed limit. In the years following the repeal, 33 states raised their speed limits, and the average fatality rate actually fell in those states. Meanwhile, Americans have saved some 200 million manhours in terms of less time spent on the road. The net economic benefit of that being between $2 and $3 billion a year.

So what have we learned? Time is a resource more precious than any other, and Ralph Nader is a lunatic zombie with no understanding of real economics.

Or have we learned anything at all? George W is the new Nixon, Iraq is the new Vietnam, and very expensive oil is the new kinda expensive oil. And just like the 1970s, national speed limits are back on the American brain. To help out the problem of expensive gas, senator John Warner (R-VA) wants a national speed limit, and he’s not the only one. Jackie Speier (D-CA) earlier this month introduced a bill that would cap highway speed limits at 60 mph. It’s currently in bureaucratic limbo just outside the House Committee on Transportation.

An interesting side note, Senator John Warner was married to Elizabeth Taylor at one point.

In an interview with TIME, John Warner talked about the 55 mph limit and said he’s trying to help “the many millions and millions [of Americans] of limited means, sitting around their kitchen table trying to figure out how to make ends meet…Maybe some guy’s got a better idea, but I haven’t seen it.”

Well, Johnny, open your eyes:

In an earlier article, The National Speed Limit is a Tool for Nazi Thugs, I wrote about the air of fear that the national speed limit created, and how speed limits clearly don’t make us safer, and don’t help us economically. Here are the major points:

First of all, more than 80% of all drivers ignore speed limits, which creates this unintended consequence of universal police fear, where motorists are more afraid of their police than they are of getting into an accident. That’s not good for anyone. Secondly, they don’t help out the economy; the money wasted in lost time greatly outweighs any potential benefit. And thirdly, they’re not safe; they just don’t prevent accidents, and in fact, they make them worse. All the data out there is crystal clear on this fact.

Look at the German Autobahn, which has no speed limits at all in certain areas. Fatalities per mile of road there are almost 30% lower than they are on the US interstate. We need to learn. Politicians need to learn. Speed limits are not the answer.

But Jackie Speier and John Warner still think they are; in fact, John Warner thinks he’s helping people. In the TIME article, he said “I’m just sensitive to people’s pain. Who’s got the courage to do something like this?”

Courage? To say something completely contrary to the facts and get behind an outdated, dangerous law that will waste billions of dollars and have an actual negative impact on peoples lives…maybe kill people? I guess you have that kind of courage, Mr. Warner.

Disagree? Just see what happens when a bunch of students decide to obey the speed limit as a form of civil disobedience:

The Mercedes-Benz GLK Gets a Sneak Peak Ahead of Bejing Unveiling

| пятница, 28 августа 2009 г.

MercedesGLK-16.jpg picture by willfusion

The Mercedes-Benz GLK has received its fair share of press and promise of the many months. First it was spied at the Sex and the City Movie set and then it received its introduction in concept dressing at this years Detroit Auto Show in January. Now the official unveiling in Bejing is at our doorstep and Mercedes-Benz is preparing the viewing public with photos and information on how they see their GLK model fitting into the Mercedes-Benz brand, into their SUV line-up and a bit of how it will appeal to buyers. That last part, appealing to buyers, is the most important part.

The GLK entry-level sport utility is aimed at competing against the BMW X3 and the up-coming Audi Q5. Taking its styling cue from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class the GLK takes on the open grilled hungry appearance that makes the new C-Class stand out on the streets. The all new design will surely gain favor with the Mercedes-Benz dedicated shopper, but in some regards the new design taps into an SUV past in shape. There is something of a touch of a shrunken down Land Cruiser to the general mold of the GLK.

Here is how Mercedes-Benz Design Chief Prof. Peter Pfeiffer described the GLK’s design influence:  “With the G-Class we created a style icon that has been a benchmark in SUV design for the past 30 years. Combining this bold concept with the latest Mercedes-Benz design idiom makes the GLK a vehicle of genuine character.”
