Slide Assassins Sunday Session

This has been an extremely busy weekend for the Motor Mavens crew in Southern Cali. Travis Hodges and I went out to bake in the sun at the IDRC Season Finale at Fontucky Dragway (aka Auto Club Dragway/California Speedway) all day Saturday. We’ll show you some of what we captured at IDRC soon enough, but first I wanted to shine a light on a special event that took place today (Sunday) at Irwindale Speedway.

Even though I was still exhausted and burnt from our skin cancerous Saturday in Fontana, I somehow dragged myself out of bed and prepared my camera gear for yet another day at the track. While I found it extremely hard to pry myself from the ice cold air conditioning blasting throughout my house, I reminded myself that I made a commitment to show up. My friend Luke Pakula kept dropping me friendly reminders about the event the Slide Assassins guys were throwing at Irwindale Speedway, so I wanted to come through and show support of their event, on behalf of the Motor Mavens crew.

After all, the Motor Mavens movement is all about supporting grassroots drifting! Everyone on our team does their best to show how much we genuinely care about the scene by being out there as much as we possibly can. Actions speak louder than words, so hopefully people will notice that our site doesn’t only cover the big events like Formula D and All Star Bash… Motor Mavens shows love by shining a light on some of the smaller events as well. And luckily for us, some of the grassroots drifters have been showing us love back!

We just can’t tell you enough how much it means to us when we see people showing their support of the site by rocking our stickers on their cars, by leaving comments on our blog posts, by reposting our links onto different forums, blogs, Facebook and Twitter pages! It is especially means a lot to us when people voice their support when they see us at events. We love that people appreciate our site, because we put a whole lot of heart and hard work into it! What’s Next: An Electric Trabant?

Nope, that’s not a joke: The New York Times is reporting that the venerable East German crap-box is set to return as an all-electric car. IndiKar’s Ronald Gerschewski says the new Trabant will “Be simple, practical, and in the old tradition of the original, but it won’t be a retro model.” The concept isn’t set to be revealed until the Frankfurt Auto Show, but if we read between the lines, we can determine that the modern vehicle will have updated styling—courtesy of model making firm, Herpa—boast dismal performance numbers, worse reliability and be assembled by uninspired, paranoid workers under the careful eyes of the Stasi. Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise 2009

Detroit’s annual Woodward Dream Cruise rolled into town this weekend along with droves of visitors looking to get in on the fun and Cruise Woodward. The estimated attendance was to the tune of just over 1 million visitors, which is said to be a few hundred thousand less than last year, although I’m not sure exactly how you’d go about counting everyone. Despite the Los Angeles-style traffic that comes with so many visitors, the boost in the economy is more than welcome around these parts. I even saw a few nuns, of all people, hustling visitors for their prime parking spots at a church parking lot. Well done sisters!

For Detroiters, it was a pleasant surprise to see the American automakers on hand and still showing their support for the event. Ford went as far as shutting down a portion of 9 mile Rd. in Ferndale,MI to turn it into Mustang Alley, lining both sides of the street with Mustangs from all generations and styles. It was pretty impressive such a variety of Mustangs including the original Shelby’s from the mid-60’s.

Has the Artsy Drift Montage Jumped the Shark?

Before I begin you should know that as the executive editor of StreetFire.net I love me some drift montage videos. And it should be noted that I did not ask the question presented in the title of this entry – believe it not, it was one of the filmmakers who produced these videos. I will protect his identity to spare him from the potential of a beat down with a sock full of P2 cards, some pursuit bars from a fixie, or whatever it is these artistic types use to submit beat downs.

With all of this in mind allow me to present the first (and potentially only) StreetFire Fab Friday Formula D Film Festival. I have three short form videos all from the some of the biggest names in drift video filmmaking (these guys are bigger than ever, its the monitors that got smaller!). All were shot at the latest FD Seattle stop. Our first submission is from Will “Cheesecake” Roegge, arguably the Quentin T of this genre. He also gets to go first because we worked together and he knows where the bodies are buried. Skylar “No Known Nickname” Smith has been rockin’ the cam and Final Cut for Falken this season and he’s quickly come into his own. You can see more of Skylar’s sexy videos on Falken’s StreetFire user profile.

Last but certainly not least is Ross Fairfield, the Dead Pirate. I used pull Dead Sailors on my MXB with aplomb and I can only assume a Dead Pirate is a cooler version. Or it could be a Turd Word that I don’t know about. BTW, one of the Fab Four FD filmmakers is MIA. With apologies to Josh “Hobo” Herron, but he lagged and didn’t get his edit up in time for this post. Maybe he’s not in “the mood” to edit a clip. You know how temperamental these artsy types can be.

“I Survived Cash For Clunkers”

Wouldn’t it be cool if this ‘85 Toronado could say this someday? Once the Cash For Clunkers nightmare is over, I’d like to print bumper stickers bearing the phrase and distribute them to every cool old heap still on the road. Sure, it’s true that right now the program is mostly just turning a bunch of Ford Explorers into metal cubes–but with trade-ins piling into the tens of thousands, you’ve got to know that plenty of rare old junk is surely being lost as well. And yes, Oldsmobile’s fugly front-wheel-drive weirdmobile might today be considered just an automotive freak of nature, hardly deserving of historical note and certainly not worth plucking off the scrap heap. But I’m betting that someday we’re going to be sorry that we crushed them all. I sure hope this one finds a good home.

Movie cars up for Auction!

Saturday August 15 – if you’ll be in LA, mark that day on your calender! Picture Car Warehouse will be auctioning off a massive movie car collection, with over 100 authentic movie and TV cars going under the hammer. The cars, including the 32 hi-boy from the latest Indiana Jones flick (below), will be auctioned off at LA Center Studios, for one day only!
